Time Travel "a reality" in 3 months, say Russians
A recent report from the Daily Mail...
Time travel could be a reality within just three months, Russian mathematicians have claimed.
They believe an experiment nuclear scientists plan to carry out in underground tunnels in Geneva in May could create a rift in the fabric of the universe.

Perhaps the fact that this story is next to "Poshs' knobbly knees" says it all??!!

On the other hand it's also the front cover story on this week's New Scientist (9th Feb 2008).
Here's the first paragraph:

When I find a link I'll post it.Michael Brooks, New Scientist wrote:AS YOU may have heard, this will be the year. The Large Hadron Collider - the most powerful ever built - will be switched on, and particle physics will hit pay-dirt. Yet if a pair of Russian mathematicians are right, any advances in this area could be overshadowed by a truly extraordinary event. According to Irina Aref'eva and Igor Volovich, the LHC might just turn out to be the world's first time machine.

I think this story may have originated from John Titor, the "Internet's favourite time traveller". He claimed that his time machine was powered by two mini black holes, and the LHC may be able to produce these.
In response to a question about this, Dr. Michio Kaku had this to say in 2005:

For a lengthy post on this subject, and John Titor in general, see this Space Time News article that the quote is taken from.Dr. Michio Kaku wrote:Mini black holes do not have the power to bend time, and CERN certainly has not produced any. The LHC will be turned on in 2 years, and there is a small chance it might create a mini black hole, but these are sub-atomic in size and energy.

It seems we might not have to wait for the LHC to produce mini black holes. Scientists at St. Andrew's University think they've found a way to create a 'virtual' black hole:
Full story from Universe Today.Using lasers, a length of optical fiber and depending on some bizarre quantum mechanics, a "singularity" may be created to alter a laser's wavelength, synthesizing the effects of an event horizon. If this experiment can produce an event horizon, the theoretical phenomenon of Hawking Radiation may be tested, perhaps giving Stephen Hawking the best chance yet of winning the Nobel Prize.

Hawaiian Man Files Lawsuit Against LHC
I did chortle at this one....
Also couldn't resist this:
Full story: Universe Today. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is set to go online in May of this year. This magnificent machine will accelerate particles and collide them at such high energies that scientists expect to make some of the biggest discoveries ever about the very small (exotic sub-atomic particles) and the very large (the structure of the Universe itself).
But not everyone is happy. Particle accelerators have always been the source of controversy; at the end of the day, we can only predict the outcome of the LHC experiments. But what if scientists have overlooked something? What if the theories are wrong? A guy living on the other side of the planet to the LHC believes the world may come to an end and he's begun filing a lawsuit against the completion of the accelerator. The concern? A massive black hole might be created, or vast amounts of antimatter will destroy the Earth. And where's the scientific basis for all this panic? Hmmm... didn't think so...

Of course there never is any evidence until there is...but by the time you find it, it might be too late to do anything about it.Ian O'Neill wrote:There is no evidence to suggest that colliding particles will create a black hole that will swallow the planet.
Risk needs to be factored into the equation because the consequences of Ian O'Neill being wrong are so dire that it doesn't even bear thinking about...If this was an FMEA exercise, the Risk value would be 10, even if the Probability is 1.
I would have felt happier, not to mention safer, if Ian O'Neil had said "This will definitely not happen" or words to that effect. The question is, why did he not do so? Saying "there is no evidence" just begs the question, and putting the word no in bold doesn't exactly help.

Mnn..not quite. The first beams are now due for injection mid June 2008 with the first collisions planned to take place 2 months later. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is set to go online in May of this year.

Our planet is not at risk from the world's most powerful particle physics experiment, a report has concluded.

Large Hadron Collider Rap is a hit
As we run up to LHC switch-on on September 10, Kate MacAlpine, who used to work in the CERN press office, has produced the LHC Rap, which has become a surprise hit on YouTube (and it's pretty good, too!)

According to The Hunt for Zero Point by Nick Cooke, this was achieved by Viktor Schauberger in 1945, deep in Nazi Czechoslovakia. Two days later the war ended, an American techno-snatch-squad was there immediately, and took the lot. The Russians too arrived, a week late. Since then the whole thing - the biggest military secret of all? - has disappeared without trace - until nowabouts. See http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/vikt ... rgergroup/ - though they're not really grasping it, over there.Michael Brooks, New Scientist wrote:the LHC might just turn out to be the world's first time machine.
