This is the Mail's article. (link broken)

Apparently it was a member of the audience who made the claim that she was being told what to say.

Daily Mail payout to Sally Morgan over psychic 'scam' articl

Post by simonwheeler »

As reported by the BBC website.
The publisher of the Daily Mail has agreed to pay "substantial" damages to a psychic after an article suggested she had "perpetrated a scam" on a theatre audience, a judge has heard.
Associated Newspapers has apologised to Sally Morgan and also agreed to pay her legal costs, the High Court was told.
Brid Jordan, for Associated Newspapers, told the judge: "The Daily Mail withdraws the suggestion that Mrs Morgan used a secret earpiece at her Dublin show in September 2011 to receive messages from off-stage, thereby cheating her audience, which it accepts is untrue."

Wow, she got most of what she was claiming for, too.

Not surprisingly the link to the DM article has gone dead.

from the website of Sally Morgan...
Sally Morgan Wins Her Fight For Justice

Sally Morgan is overjoyed to have won her libel action against the Daily Mail and to have restored her reputation and professional integrity. After an 18 month investigation into the work that Sally does, the newspaper was forced to make a full apology to Sally and pay her £125,000 in damages; one of the most substantial libel payments in recent history. Sally’s legal team, led by Graham Atkins of Atkins Thomson, and David Sherborne of counsel, describe the victory as an extremely significant result.

The case was concluded at a hearing in the High Court in London on June 20 during which the newspaper withdrew its allegation that Sally cheated her audience at a show in September 2011. Representatives for Associated Newspapers Limited admitted the accusation was untrue and apologised unreservedly to Sally for publishing it. The newspaper also agreed to pay Sally’s legal costs.

Some media reaction, from the Guardian...
Sally Morgan: how could a TV psychic win a libel payout?

You can debate whether psychics really have the powers they claim – but the Daily Mail slipped up by questioning her motives

A brief citation...
The libel settlement won by "Psychic Sally" Morgan on Thursday from the Daily Mail was greeted with incredulity and not a little anger in some quarters.

Richard Dawkins tweeted: "England, libel capital of the world. Psychics – and charlatans of all kinds – rich pickings to be had in the English law courts."
The irony is that the allegations were based quite literally on hearsay, supposition and gossip, the very things that skeptics are supposed to abhor.

I've been looking for reaction to this story, I note that one forum topic on the Magic Cafe Forum (frequented by skeptics, many of whom are stage magicians) was deleted.

Considerable strength of feeling especially from the skeptics, that such a thing could happen in a British Court of law.

However, at least one commentator echoed the point I made in a previous post:
Martin Robbins, New Statesman wrote:Skeptics shouldn't have lined up with the Mail to call Psychic Sally a fraud
...
In a supreme fit of irony, rationalists accused her of fraud without bothering to collect the evidence they needed to substantiate the claim. She sued, she won, and she deserved to win.

Here's a reaction, Ian:
Sally Morgan isn't listening to an earpiece. Bravo, Sally. Still telling people you're talking to the dead, though?

Yes, a typical skeptic response, he invokes the names of known skeptics: Richard Wiseman, Derren Brown, Tim Minchin etc.

He says that "we are left with three options" but I can think of at least one or two others.
