Long pendulums

Post by whippet-gal »

I've just read Ralph Whitlock's book & he mentions Lethbridge & his work with long pendulums (shouldn't that be pendula, or am I just being 1. pedantic 2.a show-off??) quite a bit.

I intend playing around with this link between length of string & substance being dowsed, but just wondered if anyone else had tried this and if so, did you get similar results to Lethbridge & Whitlock?

Never read the books, but I know Kevin has used very long dowsing rods at the Rollrights some six feet in length. Dont know if these are better than L rods, I never asked, too busy getting out of the way of those slashing blades.I do think its possible to TUNE dowsing rods/pendulum cords to a specific length to get better results, to have them MORE in tune with the subject you are working with.I keep my L rods short, a little over nine inches, so I can work them in the car, without poking the passengers eyes out, while parked up of cause. 8) And outside the wind does not affect the rods so much as well, short and sweet does the trick for me.

Some of the pendulums (pendula is a rare and archaic form although sometimes used in physics) sold by the BSD shop have beads on the string so that you can adjust the length. It is more common to see this used in radiesthesia, where the length of the string supposedly 'tunes' the pendulum to the specific 'rate' of the substance targeted. This was the basis of Lethbridge's work with the long pendulum.

Like many of these methods, the results tend to be subjective to the dowser concerned and not universally applicable between different dowsers. But if you do manage to find a correlation with Lethbridge's rates please do let us know! 8)

I vouch for the long pendulum Grahame, it worked for me at the time when I tried to TUNE the pendulum in to the subject. And yes it might work for some but not others, but in life you just have to give it a go, how else do anyone learn things if you dont try...With dowsing subjects so vast , I dont think you could work out any set length, it must be a case of work out each one as you study it, get to know the subject and work with it till you find its secrets, with full respect I should add folks. 8)

Mike, I agree that you can 'tune' the pendulum length to different things if that's how you want to work; I'm just not convinced that those rates are universally applicable between different dowsers. I've always found Lethbridge's reliance on the method a bit too restrictive. It gets very cumbersome when you're having to deal with string lengths of 4 feet or thereabouts!

In case anyone is interested, here are the Rates.

MATERIAL LIST
Rates in inches responding substance observations

5.5 Phosphorus )
7 Sulphur )
10 Graphite )
12 Carbon ) Reverses the sex rates
13 Slate,concrete )
14 Silica, glass, flint )

15 Glaze on pottery Includes modern porcelain
earthenware, medieval
pottery except salt-glazed,
Roman ‘samian’.

21.5 Potassium An interruptor

22 Silver, Lead, Calcium, Lead, sodium and calcium
Sodium are interruptors, Silver is
not. Salt-glaze includes
all imported German stone-
ware but not French.

22.5 Magnesium An interruptor

23.5 Vegetable and mineral
Oils, amber

24 Diamond (Male Twice the rate for Carbon
Principal)

25 Aluminium Earthenware pottery
(unglazed)

25.5 Alcohol All wines and spirits

26.5 Oxygen Water found on this rate

29 Gold (Female
Principal)

30 Hydrogen

30.5 Copper Cobalt

32 Iron

32.5 Nickel Modern Coinage

BASIC LIST

9 )
10 ) Light
11 )

20 Life Force All organic materials
Electricity living or dead, Includes
Magnetism is slightly human beings, animals,
Longer. plants, wood, rubber,
Coal, paper, bread,
Potatoes etc.

24 Male Principle also diamond.

27 Thought, Memory Most thought is based
on memory

29 Female Principal also gold

30 Sound also hydrogen

40 Sleep and death All dead organic objects.
But these also respond to
the 20 inch rate. It seems
probable that forty inches
represents life force on a
higher plane.

I recently managed to acquire some TC Lethbridge books, including 'The Essential TC Lethbridge', edited by Tom Graves. In this, Lethbridge does mention that the rate lengths are liable to be individual to each dowser and encourages everyone to develop their own rates.

I had occasion to try out a long pendulum recently, when I was asked if I could locate a buried Tupperware box containing paper documents. Not much of a target to go on, so I took my largest Tupperware box and put some paper in it, then placed it on the floor. I then tied a pendulum onto a long length of string, which I wound round a piece of wood.
Then I started it swinging over the box, lengthening the string until the pendulum changed to a circular motion. I marked this length.

This allowed me to use the 'tuned' pendulum as my witness when map dowsing, as I moved my pencil over the map with my other hand with the pendulum swinging. It worked pretty well and meant that I didn't have to keep hold of the Tupperware box as I was dowsing.
