We met Robin at last year’s Wigtown Book Festival. He and I got chatting and he told us about his own dowsing. He invited us to visit what he believed to be the site of Merlin’s grave. I am ashamed to say that, even though he gave us his phone number etc, we have never taken him up on this. Interesting and very nice man.

He's invited me to do the same a couple of times! It's not really my specialist area so I haven't followed it up, but if you fancy a day trip, perhaps we could organise something together? It's an interesting neck of the woods around there anyway.

Many years ago I attended a session carried out by a trance medium friend. During this session Geoffrey of Monmouth came through because he wanted to stress that everything he had written had been passed to him, from Strata Florida Abbey , in documentf form, hat he was told were written by some of the descendants of those who escaped the Fall of Troy. Geoffrey emphasised that he boy thamscribed those documents in book form and he was not responsible for the accuracy of the information they contained. He said that he had been told that Merlin had been born in a village near Carmarthen.

According to Clarkson, Geoffrey of Monmouth's account Vita Merlini was based on earlier poems written in archaic Welsh that he had been told, which featured an enigmatic forest-dwellng figure called Myrddin, so your dowsing fits in with that.

Clarkson's argument is that these older poems are actually of Lowland Scots origin, written in Old Welsh (which was widely spoken in Scotland at the time). He cites a manuscript in the British Library, which contains 8 chapters of 'Life of Kentigern' together with an abridged version of Vita Merlini, and a unique text entitled 'Vita Merlini Silvestri' (Life of Merlin of the Forest). The first half of the latter describes the encounter between Kentigern and a naked, hairy madman called Lailoken.

Clarkson goes on to demonstrate that this is the ur-manuscript of the Lailoken/Myrddin story as it appears to predate everything else. It's a pretty convincing thesis IMO.

Exactly. Thanks for the link Ian. The relevant passage is:
The Black Book of Carmarthen wrote:This small core refers to a legend concerning a warrior who goes mad during the Battle of Arfderydd fought c. 573 between Rhydderch Hael and Gwenddolau, two rival kings of British tribes in the 'Old North' and who, on the defeat of his master Gwenddolau, flees to the Caledonian Forest where he lives as a wild man and acquires the art of prophecy. Later, this story was relocated in Wales. However, it was Geoffrey of Monmouth in his History of the Kings of Britain (1136) who first gave this prophet of Welsh tradition the name of Myrddin and connected him with the town of Carmarthen (Caerfyrddin). In 'Ymddiddan Myrddin a Thaliesin', we encounter Geoffrey's Myrddin in conversation with the poet Taliesin, who was also credited with prophetic powers.
Both Clarkson and Crichton point towards Arfderydd as being the motte of Liddell's Strength at the junction of the Esk and Liddell rivers near Longtown.

Just like Arthur, someone similar to Merlin pops up over many time frames and locations, the answer could be re-incarnation ?

A newly-discovered manuscript with fragments of the Merlin tale has been found in a Bristol library. The manuscript, written around the 16th Century in Strasbourg, is believed to be a French version of the stories known as the Vulgate Cycle.

Dowsing Merlin today I get he was born just east of Arenig at the lake Llyn Arenig Fawr on the sw bank, which has energy Leys running ne to sw and east to west at this precise point, and lies buried near Marlborough.

Looked again dowsing and I have to say I still find Merlin was born near the lake in Wales, and I did check Scotland first to see if his influence was there. I dowsed around the lake for anything of Merlins but hit a brick wall, what ever remains is well hidden from my eyes/dowsing. This is normal when working, till who ever knows you and trusts you enough to allow further probing, remember dowsing is a two way thing, while you dowse them, THEY know you.Really sore today, my bones are old and this weather is no help, but Summer is coming, the birds are guarding nesting sites already I see.

The book is out of print, I wanted to read this to better understand the historic nature of the times, and what others think about the life and times of Merlin.

Spoke with Robin Crichton and the things he told me has sparked an interest with his story of Merlin, a number of things ring true and dowse that way. I do need to follow my dowsing of Scotland in a new light, this is unexpected and poses any number of questions now I have more detailed places to dowse and look. It’s opened my eyes to look outside the box more, I have to get the book and study it that’s for sure, already today I have to double check what I’m dowsing as the influence of Merlin is in Scotland, it’s weak but there in the places mentioned to me ??

DOWSED near Marlborough where I believe Merlin is buried and Lyn Arenig Fawr and Scotland and ALL the influences match, it has to be the same person, whow.

Some of the story explained to me dowsers correct with Merlin over the border in Scotland in the area of High Fell ,for sure he was here in the very distant past. But while someone was killed on the banks of the upper Tweed I don’t believe it was Merlin at 55.3623n. 3.2043w, but I’m looking about more for answers. It’s so interesting this story for me, and thanks to Robin for his pointers and help, it’s a story you cannot ignore and leave.

Im hurting again tonight and had problems with my laptop security, but I will follow Merlin in Scotland, this is a really exciting find, and the situation at upper Annandale is that Merlin was said to have lived and hid out in a cave on the mountain,AND close to this position is two energy Leys one running east to west and the other ne to sw along with a deep fault line all at this precise point where I think Merlin could have spent some time in this strong influence. Its said he got his powers while hiding here, and in this influence you wonder how it affected him ? At other places like this ancient man erected stone circles and all sorts of standing stones to mark the forces, while on Hart Fell its just a cave, WHICH might even remain there today perhaps, who knows ??

Just cleared Callanish Stone Circle/forces to feed the entire area again, its building forces as I write tonight, a really good nights work.
