Interesting how these old memes come round again - the 'singing crickets' story is going a bit viral on Facebook and the blogosphere just now, with lots of discussions over whether it is actually all cricket sounds, or if it included some human input from an opera singer called Bonnie Jo Hunt.

There has always been confusion over the provenance of this recording, and even if it doesn't include the singer, it seems clear to me that the recording isn't
solely the slowed-down crickets. There must have been some manipulation of the sound, like sampling several short sections at different speeds and playing them back on a keyboard to create the melody - in other words, the final sound that you hear
has been shaped by human hands, although the source material may just be sampled cricket noises.
